THE NEED

FOR DIAPERS

Diaper insecurity is a real crisis. Daily, diapers compete with shelter, food, utilities, and medicine. It produces far-reaching effects in the community and consequently, a lack of diapers puts children at increased risk of health problems because some may be left too long in soiled diapers. Furthermore, it can jeopardize the mental health of mothers and families.

What is a Diaper Bank?

Diaper banks across America are nonprofit groups that distribute free diapers in their community, and it is structured similar to a food bank. They work with faith-based organizations, social service agencies, homeless shelters, food pantries and other community groups to distribute diapers to families in need.
• Did you know that according to the National Diaper Bank Check 2023, the diaper need is a growing problem, and furthermore, 3 in 5 parents miss work or school because they can’t afford the diapers required to leave their baby with childcare providers. This creates more barriers since it prevents children from participating in quality early education opportunities, therefore, making the cycle of poverty more difficult to break.
• Central Oregon has approximately 12,353 families living below poverty level that struggle with diaper needs. The average monthly expense varies according to the age of the child and cost of diapers. Estimated costs range from $90.00 - $100.00 dollars per month, per family. The total cost calculates to over 1 million dollars every month in Central Oregon. Diapers compete with other critical basic necessities for families living in poverty and this is one of the adversities that parents face every day.
